QUANG DANG FOR MURRAY
City Council District 3
My journey and why I am the best choice to represent Murray District 3
My name is Quang Dang, but everyone calls me “Q”. I was born in Vietnam and immigrated to Utah because of the Vietnam War. I've called Utah home ever since, becoming a naturalized citizen when I was 15 (I remember the swearing-in ceremony vividly). I moved to Murray in 2013 after my divorce. As a father with joint custody of two amazing children who grew up in Murray, I am proud to say both are now in college. Through the years, I grew to understand and appreciate the importance of community and the support it provides us all.
Community engagement became my passion in 2010, when I learned about legislation allowing state representatives to keep communications with special interest groups secret. I firmly believe in transparency and accountability as cornerstones of good governance. Partnering with friends and neighbors, we successfully repealed that law through a citizens' referendum—an effort that earned me the Roy Gibson Freedom of Information Award. When another legislation passed to increase the food tax, I again spearheaded a referendum to repeal this bill that negatively impacted so many fellow citizens. As the volunteer captain at the Brickyard Harmons, I gathered over 30,000 signatures, and we successfully repealed the increase in the food tax. These efforts are all about standing up for what’s right and making our community a better place.
More about me
In October of 2023, I received a kidney transplant. For me, this was a medical miracle, and it transformed my life. I want to make the most of my second chance and help as many people as I can. This is a core reason I want to serve as a council member for Murray City. For me, serving others is my highest calling.
Currently, I teach math at the Utah Military Academy in Lehi. I am also a graduate student in the University of Utah’s School Psychology Program. I hold bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Philosophy, a master's degree in Education, and will earn an Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology.
I bring to the city council my unique perspective of an immigrant, engaged citizen, teacher, and psychologist. I am dedicated to ensuring Murray is a place where families can grow, children can learn, and everyone feels heard and represented.
